General ENT

Ear Infections

Ear infections can be common and quite painful. Our practice will work to correctly diagnose, treat and prevent these infections.

Sinus Infections

The sinuses are cavities within the skull. They can become inflamed and infected due to allergies, environmental irritants or other causes. Treatments vary widely and while traditional sinus sugery is the best option at times, a new procedure called balloon sinuplasty may be the solution you need.

Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon Sinuplasty^TM technology is an FDA-cleared, endoscopic, catheter-based system for patients suffering from sinusitis. The technology uses a small, flexible, Sinus Balloon Catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways, restoring normal sinus drainage and function. When the sinus balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the walls of the passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.

Steps in using the Balloon Sinuplasty^TM technology (www.acclarent.com)

The technology is used by qualified ear, nose and throat physicians.

Using the Balloon Sinuplasty^TM system, your physician gently places a Sinus Guide Catheter and a flexible Sinus Guidewire through the nostrils to access the target sinus. Next, a Sinus Balloon Catheter is advanced over the Sinus Guidewire.

The Sinus Balloon Catheter is positioned across the blocked ostium and gently inflated.

The Balloon Sinuplasty^TM system is removed, leaving an open sinus passageway and restoring normal drainage and function.

The Benefits in Using the Balloon Sinuplasty^TM Technology

Safe and Effective
While use of any surgical instrument involves some risk, clinical studies have indicated the Balloon Sinuplasty^TM system to be safe and effective in relieving symptoms of sinusitis.

Minimally Invasive
The technology uses small, soft, flexible devices that enter entirely through the nostrils. These devices gently open blocked sinus openings, in many cases without tissue or bone removal.

Reduced Bleeding
Because in many instances no tissue or bone is removed when using this technology, there may be reduced bleeding associated with the procedure. As a result, the need for uncomfortable nasal packing may also be eliminated.

Improved Recovery Time
While recovery time varies with each patient, many people can return to normal activities within 24 hours.

Does Not Limit Treatment Options
This technology is an endoscopic tool and may be used with other medical therapies or sinus surgery techniques. It does not limit future treatment options if you have progressive disease.

Allergic Rhinitis

Our practice has the ability to set you up for formal allergy testing and work with you in many regards on allergy control.

Thyroid Masses

Thyroid masses can be either benign or malignant. There are several tests which may be needed to help the doctor in diagnosing your mass properly.

Parotid masses

The parotid is a gland which is situated near the ear. It may become inflamed due to disease or infection.

Voice Problems

Our practice has the ability to diagnose and treat a variety of voice problems including hoarseness.

Snoring

Snoring is a common complaint. It is sometimes caused by anatomical problems which can be corrected surgically.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

A formal sleep study may be needed in order to correctly diagnose this problem. An exam and history are used in conjunction with the sleep study to figure out the best treatment plan for you.

Head and Neck Cancers

Our practice can offer surgical assistance in the treatment of your cancer. This is performed in conjunction with your oncologist and other members of your health-care team.

Nasal obstruction

We will work to discover what is causing your obstruction as well as what treatment will eliminate it.

Nose Bleeds

Nose bleeds are commonly seen in ENT. It is important to determine the exact location of the bleed as well as the reasoning behind the bleed in order to treat this problem.

Skin Cancers

Unfortunately, skin cancers are seen frequently and their incidence is on the rise. Because of Dr. Scharer's additional training in facial plastic surgery, you will achieve the desired look from a skin cancer removal.

Congenital Malformations

Congenital malformations can be corrected either for medical or cosmetic purposes. Dr. Scharer will carefully evaluate each patient to determine what the best course of treatment will be. Oftentimes, a correction deemed medically necessary will be covered by insurance.

Botox

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). www.botox.com

Cosmoplast/Cosmoderm

Both of these products are collagen fillers that can be used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, these fillers are able to augment or "plump up" certain areas in the face such as lips and nasolabial folds. Click here for example.

Juvederm

Juvederm is the "next generation" in cosmetic fillers, as it contains the highest concentration of hylauronic acid. This filler can be used for augmentation and for facial contouring. www.juvedermusa.com

Radiesse

Radiesse is a safe, FDA-approved dermal filler that can restore a natural, youthful look. This treatment fills and corrects smile lines, Nasolabial folds and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. www.radiesse.com

Captique

This gel contains a purified form of hyaluronic acid, which works to add volume lost during the aging process by temporarily smoothing out facial lines and wrinkles. www.inamed.com

Surgical Procedures

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

A blepharoplasty can correct "droopy" eyes, puffiness and bags under the eyes. This surgery can help you look refreshed and bright by removing excess fat, muscle and skin in the eye area. In some cases, a blepharoplasty can improve your vision.

Facial Scar Treatment

The goal of scar treatment is to improve the look of the scar. This is achieved by changing the location of the scar, concealing the scar or minimizing the scar. Facial scarring includes acne, keloids, hypertrohic scars and injuries or trauma obtained from a variety of sources.

Forehead and Brow Lift

The forehead and brow often become wrinkled and heavy as we age. This is due to a number factors including sun exposure, lifestyle behaviors and normal aging processes. There are several different approaches to the forehead and/or brow lift, and what is right for you is customizable. The wrinkles in the forehead area can be reduced or eliminated, leaving the patient feeling refreshed and looking younger.

Mentoplasty (Chin Augmentation)

This procedure is for men and women looking to have a stronger profile and more balanced facial structure. Some patients are born with small chins that are disproportionate to their other facial features. Other patients just desire a stronger, more pronounced chin.

Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty is a common procedure among both children and adults. It works to correct the ear that "sticks out." Protruding ears can lead to extensive teasing in a child; therefore, an otoplasty procedure can help self-esteem and self-confidence. This surgery is not limited to children, however, and many adults benefit from ear surgery as well. Ears can be pinned back to reduce protrusion, as well as reshaped if needed.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

One can be unhappy with their nose for a wide variety of reasons. Injury and aging change the outward appearance of the nose.
